The massage/perfumery shop
These two very friendly folk gave massages, discussed perfumes and sold them in small vials. They also sold colorful pouches. In the background you can see the man's bow and arrows, and an illustration of a story he related to us. The story tells of three evil men and how an old man (senex) was sent to trick them by revealing to them that there was money (haec est pecunia) hidden under the tree (arbor). The evil men dug it out and realized it was too much to carry, so one of them went to the village to bring a cart. While he was away the other two devised a plan to kill him so they'd get his share of the gold. Meanwhile, he thought of killing them both, and to do so brought back three bottles of wine, two of which were poisoned. When he returned, the other two killed him and celebrated by drinking the wine, and the land was rid of the three evil men. (In the far background, you can see the potter's shop.) |
