✎ The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge and officially titled the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, is a double-decked cantilever bridge carrying 9 lanes (4 upper, 5 lower) of NY 25, and 1 lane for pedestrians/bicycles over the East River. It connects the neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens with Manhattan, passing over Roosevelt Island. The bridge opened to the public on March 30, 1909, having cost about $18 million and 50 lives. The bridge was, for a long time, simply called the Queensboro Bridge, but in March 2011, the bridge was officially renamed in honor of former New York City mayor Ed Koch -- after much protest (most NY'ers still call it the Queensboro Bridge). The bridge was added to the NRHP in 1978 & designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2009. The bridge underwent extensive & costly [$300 million] renovation between 1987-2012.

1909 built and renamed for a guy only born in 1924? Well, I would refuse to aknowledge that silly renaming too. If they must name it for people, the deserving ones should be Henry Hornbostel and Gustav Lindenthal who did construct all this. I guess the architectural features from stones like seen here where designed by Hornbostel, the revival architecture guy. The other was the one with experiance in steel trusses spanning expanses.

What ticked people off more than anything about the renaming was that they chose the bridge from the borough he wasn't even born in and had the least to do with. I mean, he was a staunch Bronx Jew so folks in Queens were baffled about the choice to rename the 59th street (Queensboro) bridge instead of one from his home borough of the Bronx.... Or heck, even the Brooklyn Bridge would've been a better choice since that borough has the biggest population of Jewish residents and were also his biggest supporters. Besides all that, renaming a landmark is never going to go well with NY'ers in general ;)
