Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge Tower
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Queens-Manhattan, NYC, NY. Full spectrum color, high definition + HDR photo merger… ✎ The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge and officially titled the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, is a double-decked cantilever bridge carrying 9 lanes (4 upper, 5 lower) of NY 25, and 1 lane for pedestrians/bicycles over the East River. It connects the neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens with Manhattan, passing over Roosevelt Island. The bridge opened to the public on March 30, 1909, having cost about $18 million and 50 lives. The bridge was, for a long time, simply called the Queensboro Bridge, but in March 2011, the bridge was officially renamed in honor of former New York City mayor Ed Koch -- after much protest (most NY'ers still call it the Queensboro Bridge). The bridge was added to the NRHP in 1978 & designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2009. The bridge underwent extensive & costly [$300 million] renovation between 1987-2012. |
