✎ The critically endangered species is endemic to Kauai, HI, where a group of four trees appear to be the only remaining wild population. The damage caused by cattle was realized in 1928, when the species was first brought into cultivation. While that threat has been removed, the habitat continues to be steadily degraded by the spread of invasive plants, feral pigs and human activities. The species has been listed under the US Endangered Species Act since 1998 & has shown no signifiant recovery in the wild since.
