California produces about 90% of all the strawberries eaten in the United States. In 2010, more than 2 billion pounds of strawberries were hand-picked and shipped all over the country. If you lined up all the strawberries grown each year, they would circle the Earth almost 17 times! In mild, coastal areas like California, strawberries grow year-round. This one was grown in Salinas. I dreamed of photographing a sliced strawberry the night before I took this, thinking it was a fruit. It is actually more closely related to a rose.

Pretty =) The place we get most of our strawberries from imports them from Canada. Which is probably a good thing 'cause CA produce is also responsible for 90% (or more) of the life threatening E. coli outbreaks in the US, too ;)

That aside, that's one yummy-looking berry =)

Fun presentation!

The jummy bit is a bottom bearing very tiny seeds on top, in so far when it comes to foodplant parts, they are a bit like the artichokes, of course those are in taste and how to prepare best rather different. Strawberry sauteed in garlic oil sounds not really like a great idea, but artichoke raw with sugared cream on top might be even worse. LOL

Sonja. When is your restaurant opening, again?

Hi Fizgig. California is one of the main places the food is grown. The reason the e.coli comes from here is mainly political. In our system, the food is grown by big agriculture. (a big mistake for the earth, to start with). Their money goes to bribe politicians to look the other way in regulating crop safety. In this administration, the heads of those departments are placed there for the purpose of destroying them. Oversight disappears, and our citizens suffer the death of a thousand cuts. When are we moving to Canada, eh?
