This is one of my mom's friend's dogs, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi (I think) named Fritz, the result of playing with the heal tool in GIMP. The original picture is on the right.

That is impressive! I have to try that.

Be warned, it's quite tedious.

That is awesome, I can never do anything very useful with the heal tool.

That's impressive indeed. I saw this kind of work done with GREYCstoration and tried it myself. Well, that was also tedious and still without such good results as this picture.

Was there a reason to use the healing instead of the cloning tool? Or was it meant as an exercise in healing?

I used the heal tool just because it seemed to give more natural-looking results than the clone tool, though I did use the clone tool to fix a few weird artifacts from the heal tool's algorithm. I just wanted to see how much I could get away with erasing from a picture. I was surprised how well it turned out. To be honest, I also cheated a little and used unsharp mask to try and cover up some artifacts I couldn't quite get rid of otherwise.
